Help Fix the Voting Rights Act

Voting - Right to Vote

Sign the petition:  What we have to remember is that in a democracy things are in flux all the time.  Just because a bill becomes law doesn’t mean it will stay that way.  The powerful are constantly trying to change things to fit their agendas.   And regarding Voting Rights, “thanks to the Supreme Court, the Voting Rights Act is weaker now than when it was passed 50 years ago.”  Conservative groups worked hard to undo the progress that progressives took for granted and now old battles must be fought again, just to get back to where we were.  Read the Credo Action below and sign the petition helping to “Fight to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore the Voting Rights Act and block new efforts to suppress African-American and Latino votes.”

Hillary Supports a Great Idea on Voting

Voting - Respect the right  Read this:  This article from The Nation Magazine, by Ari Berman recaps how Hillary Clinton surprised everyone in her speech yesterday (06-04-15) in Texas.  She called for a national version of what has been done in Oregon and is pending in other states such as CA.  She was talking about voting rights (Voting Rights Amendment or VRA) here in the United States of America (or what we might want to consider another endangered species).

Recently, “nine of 15 states that previously had to submit their voting changes with the federal government before the Supreme Court gutted the VRA have passed new voting restrictions since 2010. The Supreme Court’s decision has had a devastating impact in states like Texas, whose strict voter-ID law was previously blocked under the VRA but is now in effect, leading to many longtime voters being turned away from the polls.”  Do you suppose no one saw that coming?

Here are Hillary’s 3 main points but read the article for more details:

  1. Automatically register voters
  2. Expand early voting
  3. Restore the Voting Rights Act

Make Voting Easy – Expand Voting Rights

 Voting Rights - Oregon
Sign the petition:  Name someone in congress who suggests expanding voting rights.  Most of us couldn’t.  But, believe it or not there is a push to do just that and at least one state has moved forward with a truly progressive idea about voting rights.  “Oregon passed a bill automatically registering all eligible voters as soon as they get their driver’s license.”  Wait for the backlash, the voting fraud, you may be thinking.  I for one doubt there will be any just like there has been almost no voting fraud to justify the recent rash of voter restricting legislation across the country.  Laws like: “Cutting off early voting in Ohio. Burdensome voter ID laws in North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Texas. The list goes on and on!”  Sign the petition and join “Senate Democrats in calling for measures to vastly increase the amount of eligible voters in America, and open the democratic process to all.”

Rigging the Electoral College, State by State Is Just Wrong!

 Democracy - Splitting the Vote
Sign the petition:  Republican “lawmakers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin and, most recently, Michigan to split electoral votes in presidential elections”.  This is outrageous and another one of the many reasons why states rights too often go against democracy and instead become a tool easily utilized by those with power (i.e. money).  Lacking the popular vote majority, these states want to change their election rules in order to move from their current “winner take all” system to one “proportional representation”.  This political gamesmanship must be stopped.
