A Reasonable Legislative Procedural Change: You Amend It, You Own It

Transparency Read this:  Occasionally we are reminded what a juvenile game politics really is.  This Mother Jones article By Kevin Drum discusses a favorite tactic.  Like children they often hide from what they do to avoid taking responsibility.  “Last week Wisconsin Republicans tried to sneak language into a budget bill that would have gutted the state’s open records law … Republicans have refused to disclose who inserted the language into the budget legislation”.  This doesn’t only happen at the state level either.  Drum’s proposal for legislative transparency is simple: “every change in every law has to be attributed to someone … no virgin birth here.”  Pretty simple huh?

BAD  DEMOCRACY – Anti-Environmental Riders In Budget & Spending Bills

Congressional Poker  Sign the petition:  I expect congress to deal with important issues and make intelligent choices on our behalf.  But, I need to remember that expectations are dangerous and congress is just the ultimate high stakes game.  Here is an example that may anger you.  The organization EARTHJUSTICE has put together a petition that is well worth signing.  “This week, the U.S. House of Representatives will be voting on the FY2016 environmental spending bill—and it’s riddled with two dozen anti-environmental policy riders that seek to undo or block protections for clean air, clean water and wildlife.”  This is not how a democracy is supposed to work, but it is the primary way we play the game today.  Technically it is legal but we need to hold its’ advocates responsible for these types of tactics and remove them from office.  If an issue can’t be passed or rejected on its’ merits then so be it, but these types of tactics are the worst type of sheer gamesmanship and should insult the integrity of congress – if there is any left.  Maybe I am a bit too naive and idealistic, but then again, maybe we all should be.  Read more from the link below and hopefully sign the petition.

No-one Blinks As Propaganda Has Officially Become “The News”

News Propaganda  Read this:  This article from Al Jazeera America by C. Robert Gibson takes a look at one of my pet peeves – Propaganda As News.  Gibson starts with a 1958 warning from journalist Edward R. Murrow that “the new medium was being used to ‘distract, delude, amuse and insulate’ the public.”  Warnings, however, often go unheeded and thus “0n June 8, CNN unveiled ‘Courageous,’ a new production unit and an in-house studio that would be paid by advertisers to produce and broadcast news-like ‘branded content’.”  What they are doing is “funding the network to produce PR segments made to look like news”.  While the public naively accepts “news” as being honest and objective, they must instead be ever more sophisticated critics seeking to see behind the mask of news journalism for substance and facts.  Gibson sums it up as follows: “More than ever before, the American public needs reliable, impartial news outlets that report on the stories of the day honestly and objectively. And while some savvy news consumers may turn to independent, online sources for information that is free from corporate influence, the majority of Americans who work 8 to 10-hour days don’t have the time or energy to seek out these sources.”  Gone are the days when “broadcasters were granted licenses with the understanding that they would operate in the public interest.”  Maybe there should be a warning label flashing at the bottom of the screen saying “Viewer beware, reporting on this show may not reflect actual facts” or some other disclaimer.  How about being very strict about any show with the word “News” in its title along with devastating penalties for breaches.  Read the full article for a better feel for what Mr. Gibson said and watch “news” with caution.

If We Had A Liberal Media We Might Ask Some Questions & Get Some Answers

Liberal Media Myth  Read this:  This article in The Daily KOS, by akadjian examines the mythical existence of a “liberal media”.  Although the right continues to point to this evasive entity, it is far past time we just admit IT DOESN’T EXIST.  The article then says: “If you know anyone who still believes in a ‘liberal media,’ here’s 15 things everyone would know if there really were a “liberal media” (inspired by Jeff Bezos’ purchase of The Washington Post).”  It then examines these 15 topics and you begin to realize, “yes” we would be much better off if there really was a “liberal media”.  Most people don’t ask these questions – which is really sad.  Read the article and if there is any liberal blood in you – you will probably agree and maybe start asking.

5 Years Later and BP Suggests Success – It’s Magic or Is It?

 BP - Money
Read this and remember:  Mistakes should have consequences and for most of us little people there usually do.  However, when corporate people (remember corporations now have the constitutional protections of personhood) make mistakes they seem to be able to avoid or define any consequences.  First of all no one ever seems to go to jail and second, their financial consequences quickly become a litigation nightmare that is controlled by the best legal and PR firms money can buy.  One of the best examples of this is the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in June 2010.  If you watch TV you have undoubtedly seen recent commercials by BP that suggest “problem solved” and what a great job BP has done.  Remember, “controlling the message” has been the primary goal since day one and it has been a major piece of the cleanup budget.  The real story may never be known, but it is not what BP commercials tell you.  Click on the link below and read the article about studies in the Gulf.  Watch to see the size of other financial liabilities BP is liable for or somehow avoids.  Above all, remember it and use that knowledge to make sure you vote and support people who value and speak the truth rather than the BP champions rewarded by the mighty lobbies and the dollars they provide.  Also, beware of articles that may look to be from neutral sources but are in fact part of the BP propaganda.
