Drilling In The Artic? Obama, You’re Better Than That

Obama Stop Shell

Sign the petition:  According to the Guardian “Scientists have made it clear: 100% of Arctic oil must stay in the ground if we want to prevent the worst impacts of climate change.”  Yet Obama is all over the place on the environment, particularly regarding the Arctic.  Last week he “ignored their warnings and approved Arctic drilling. But now he’s pushing the boundaries of denial even further – by heading to Alaska on Monday to talk about the urgency of climate change.”  Obama has often led us to believe he really believes the dangers implied by Climate Change and he sometimes seems on the right side.  As this petition summarizes so beautifully, “Climate Leaders Don’t Drill the Arctic. Talking about the urgency of climate change while allowing massive fossil fuel extraction isn’t leadership, it’s hypocrisy. Science says we must not burn 80% of known fossil fuel reserves, including all Arctic oil. President Obama, to lead on climate, you must Keep It In The Ground.”  Sign the petition to urge him down the right path.

Wall Street Insiders Influence In Government Needs To End

Progressive Presidents  Sign the petition:  This petition by The Progressive Change Campaign Committee (BoldProgressives.org) once again gives us a means to speak out to ensure that future president appointments protect citizens and not corporations.  This is not legislation but a promise by presidential candidates.   “Legislation is important. But our next president can significantly reform Wall Street — and restore accountability — by choosing the right people to appoint … What we need now is for presidential candidates to make crystal clear promises about specific government appointees and positions — and for them to make Wall Street reform and accountability central to their campaigns.”  This petition is supported by Elizabeth Warrne, Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton and Mark O’Malley.  Please join other progressives by signing the petition.

Presidential Candidates – REFUSE FOSSIL FUEL $ NOW

Color-oil-Gas-subsides  Sign the petition:  Once again, 350.org supports a very simple and blunt and on point petition.  If you are a serious candidate for President of the U.S. in 2016, then you should “refuse fossil fuel money now”.  Likewis, we as voters should continue to watch and if you accept any money you will not be considered as a legitimate option.  WE WILL NO LONGER PLAY AROUND ON THIS ISSUE.As the link below states “If humanity is going to have a fair chance of limiting climate change to two degrees Celsius, the internationally agreed upon target, then we need to keep 80 percent of fossil fuels underground, unburned … The next President of the United States will be a crucial part of that — whether it’s decisions about Arctic drilling, or fossil fuel extraction on public lands — so we need to do everything we can to push him or her to side with us over the fossil fuel industry. And that simply can’t happen if candidates are taking barrels of money from the companies driving the crisis.”

McKibben Gives Obama & Clinton Climate Change Reviews & To Do Lists

Bill McKibben  Read these:  I don’t know if we are going to have any chance in changing environmental policies in the US then we have to count on the Democrats.  But progress, although mostly in the correct direction, has moved much too slowly.  In the two articles below 350.org’s Bill McKibben writes 2 very different letters to President Barack Obama and Secretary Hillary Clinton.  He focuses on what each has done / not done, and what the climate crisis requires.  Basically he gives them each an environmental review and to do list going forward.  Check these out and consider his points as mandatory policy guidelines for each candidate you support.

Letter to President Barack Obama:  Here Bill describes learning how the process works.  He then gives Obama “credit where credit is due”, goes into some detail as to “why this has not been enough” and finally gives him a “checklist for his final 18 months”.

Letter to Secretary Hillary Clinton:  Here Bill reviews the highlights of what Clinton has done to date, provides “five reasons environmentalists distrust her”, lists “seven ways she could win some green stripes” and finishes by identifying “How she could really shift the climate tide”

Really BLM – COAL National Park?

Coal - Powder River Basin  Read this:  It is so hard to tell where Obama is on climate change.  He almost never makes a bold move and the problem is when talking about climate change, what we need is bold.  In the articled, on the link below, from The Sierra Club, Mary Anne Hitt exposes another gaping hole in any kind of energy policy by the Obama administration.  “The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has just made an under-the-radar decision that threatens to set back U.S. progress on clean energy and climate change.”  Renewable energy costs are dropping fast and we have made some good progress in the area of coal reduction.  But, if this BLM decision becomes reality we can kiss that all good bye.  I don’t know what control Obama has over BLM decisions but if he doesn’t actively battle this then his record on the environment deserves a very low score indeed.  Ms. Hitt summarizes it this way: “To put this in perspective, BLM’s plan could add up to 16.9 billion metric tons of carbon pollution to the atmosphere — the equivalent of 19 times the carbon pollution generated by all U.S. passenger cars in a year.”Please watch what happens on this front and be active and give Obama an earful.

Bernie’s Way of Governing – I Like It!

Bernie Sanders  Read this:  This article from The Nation Magazine by Peter Dreier and Pierre Clavel may give you some insight into what type of president he would be.  I must admit it is inspiring and it shouldn’t be a surprise.  He showed time and again that he went to bat for the little guy and did not roll over to big money.  If you haven’t thought about Bernie Sanders for president, it may be time to look and look hard.  He is right on almost every issue.

Tar Sands Oil Is Still A Possibility In The USA – Say NO, Sign the Petition

 Keystone XL - Stop It
Sign the petition:   Believe it or not, the final decision on bringing the Canadian Tar Sands Oil (the filthiest oil known) through the US mid west to be exported to other nations via the XL Pipeline, is still pending.  All the biggest lobbyists are applying continuous pressure to President Obama to give in and give it the old “green” light (more likely a black light).  “Imagine a ‘tar sands invasion’ of epic proportions in California: a sprawling network of pipelines, a navy’s-worth of supertankers and barges up and down our rivers and coasts, and an enormous fleet of explosive railway tank cars. No matter where you live, there’s a good chance you’ll be in the danger zone.”  No matter what you may see or hear on TV or elsewhere, this is not inevitable and it can be stopped.  It is not safe and there will be accidents, some devastating.  “Tell President Obama to stop Big Oil’s assault and protect our natural heritage, our communities, and our climate from the dangers of filthy tar sands oil.”

It’s The Supreme Court Stupid – That’s You and Me!

Supreme Court bought and paid for
Read this:  This article from The Daily KOS, by Mark E Andersen, shows where our focus should really be in the 2016 race for the Presidency of the United States.  Talk is already rampant as to the Pros and Cons of this candidate or that candidate.  The Democrats say Hillary is too … or not … enough.  The media is busy making these issues much bigger than they deserve and many issues really have no place in a presidential campaign at all.  But the message is controlled by roughly 4 giant media corporations and unless you spend a little time, to find other sources, that is all you will hear.  But “None of that matters. If she is the nominee, we must support her whether or not we think she is the establishment candidate or the corporate candidate. Why? The U.S. Supreme Court. The next president will likely nominate several Supreme Court justices.”  If the Democratic candidate (assumng Hillary) loses, “the Supreme Court will tilt right for the foreseeable future.”  If the court becomes more conservative the climate is in big trouble, inequality will jump to the next level and “We The People” will continue to shrink as the all important “Corporations” rape and pillage unchecked, writing their own laws and rewarding the powerful.  This is truly something that should not be ignored.  This is the time to put on your Populist hat and do the right thing.

A Candidate With Some Different Ideas – Not Bad!

 Good Luck
Read this:  OK, this article in The Nation, by Michael Moore, is a bit of a reach and yes lots of people don’t particularly like him (why I have no idea), but he brings up several really desirable policy changes.  Of course, since it is Michael Moore there is always nested sarcasm, but several of his ideas would be great as talking points in all of the 2016 presidential debates.  I would love to see Hillary forced to seriously deal with many of these, and can you imagine seeing the Republican Oligarchy lovers discussing them?  Although this is obviously just an entertaining article it seriously emphasizes the fact that the real issues / policies that could help average Americans and maybe help turn our priorities around are probably not going to be discussed during the upcoming debates and even if mentioned, have little chance of becoming policy.  I would love to see Michael Moore at the table.  Let’s make it a real Progressive event.  How about Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Ralph Nader, Robert Redford, Jerry Brown, Dennis Kucinich and others.  BRING IT ON GANG!  While we are at it, let’s change the format of the debates so there can be real discussions and no reiterations of talking points.
