Keystone XL Pipeline protests may be working!

 Stop Keystone XL
Read this: With the Keystone pipeline still in limbo, TransCanada gets the ball rolling on Plan B — shipping tar-sands oil to Canada’s eastern coast.  Although this is still the wrong thing, we may be on track to block it from coming through the US.  Maybe Canada will also wake up and say no.

Worst case, what will the impact of Climate Change look like?

 Climate Change - poster
Check this out: There are lots of speculations regarding Climate Change.  Is it real?  How bad will it be?  What will the effects be?  Etc.
The Earth could warm another 2 to 11.5°F this century if we fail to reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels and deforestation—devastating our livelihoods and the natural world we cherish.  The Environmental Defense Fund has put together answers to much of this.  It is well worth reading and may get you to do something.  Think of getting on their email list.

We must keep the pressure on – say NO TO TPP FAST TRACKING!

 TPP - Stop it
Sign the petition: Don’t blink.  Corporations are continuing to push for TPP fast tracking.
Negotiations in Australia, aimed at hatching a final Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal, came to a close earlier this week. Given the extreme secrecy of the process, there is no way for the public, Congress or the press to find out what really happened.
Supporters of the dangerous 12-nation deal are using terms like “endgame,” “breakthrough” and “finish line.” We’ve heard this spin before. But thanks to growing opposition, TPP deadlines in 2012 and 2013 were missed.
We know that a lot of TPP issues seem to be unresolved. But we also know that very bad deals often get done in secrecy when the pressure to make a deal — any deal — is on. We can’t afford to wait and see.
The outstanding issues will decide if the medicine we need is affordable, if more devastating financial crises are in our future and if corporations can use investor-state panels to attack our laws and raid our governments’ treasuries.

Tell President Obama: Make it clear that the U.S. will not engage in torture at home or abroad.

AAT on its way to visit Sen. Dianne Feinstein
Sign the petition: Next month, the U.S. must report to the United Nations committee that monitors compliance with the international Convention Against Torture.2 State Department officials want the administration to explicitly refute the Bush administration position reserving the legal right to torture prisoners held on foreign soil.
Pentagon and CIA officials, however, fear that making such a statement could expose Bush administration officials who participated in torture to prosecution. And they want to maintain a loophole in the Obama administration’s current anti-torture policies that would open the door for American officials to engage in torture outside our country’s borders, including at foreign black sites.

Add your name: Urge the G20 countries to commit the money, troops, and medics needed to #EndEbola.

Sign the petition: We’re in a race against time. The United Nations has a roadmap to stopping the Ebola outbreak. And here’s what’s needed by the end of November to stay on track:
  • More money – The UN estimates it will need nearly $1 billion to contain the outbreak, scale up its response, and reduce the number of Ebola cases, and countries have committed less than half that amount.
  • More troops – Not to keep the peace, but to build and support new treatment and isolation centers on a massive scale, as well as provide logistics for the humanitarian response.
  • More medics – Before the outbreak, Liberia had just 51 doctors serving a population of 4.2 million. The new treatment and isolation centers need many more doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals to treat Ebola patients and train others.

Pay to Prey: Governors Facilitate the Predatory Outsourcing of America’s Public Services

 We the People
Watch and read: Republicans and some democrats seem to believe in selling government services to the highest bidder and let the citizens be damned!
After the midterm elections of 2010, a new era of politics began. Republicans across the nation, propped up by special interests, began to take over statehouses and implement draconian laws aimed at taking away the rights of American citizens. In Michigan, for example, Gov. Rick Snyder privatized prison food services to a contractor. What followed sounds like an episode from Orange is the New Black: maggots served up with food, sexual trysts with inmates, and even an attempted murder for hire.

The 350 Pacific Climate Warriors – truly David versus Goliath.

 Keep Home Above Water
Watch and sign: This is a follow-up to an earlier post regarding the Pacific Climate Warriors.  Please watch the video and sign the petition to do a little toward restricting further expansion of carbon products and runaway Climate Change.  The Pacific Warriors are not acting alone, I stand in solidarity with them and frontline communities around the world. The Pacific Climate Warriors are speaking for frontline communities around the world who will be hit first and worst by the catastrophic climate change your companies are supporting. Together we are calling for an end to the industries that are threatening their homes and their culture. I will not let them drown, I am fighting alongside them.

Fox News and the Conservative Mindset

 News
Read this:  The Daily KOS puts together a short piece on “The Science Of Fox News: Why Its Viewers Are The Most Misinformed” where it delves into “The Core Thesis: Authoritarian people have a stronger emotional need for an outlet like Fox, where they can find affirmation and escape factual challenges to their beliefs.”  For this they used “Insights from Chris Mooney’s book The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science and Reality.”

Stories of Californians fighting to ban fracking – while Gov. Brown seems to be deaf!

 Stop Fracking
Read, Listen & Sign the petition: Gov. Brown doesn’t seem to be listening and cities across the state are granting permits with little or no protections for citizens, water and the environment.  The potential for problems thoroughly outweighs any benefits from the energy potential that may be extracted.  These citizens are aggressively advocating “Measure P” on this year’s ballot.  Please sign.
